Created at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (the Johannesburg Summit) in 2002, and formally launched at a Wider Caribbean “Partnership Conference” held in Miami in March 2004, WW2BW has fostered over 100 partnerships since that event.

As an alliance, WW2BW promotes regional cooperation and strengthens developing country capacity to address land-based sources of marine pollution; promotes sustainable tourism, fisheries, agricultural and forestry practices; and prevents the degradation of coastal areas.
